About Unix time

What it is

Unix time counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, the “epoch”. It ignores time zones and leap seconds, which makes it ideal for storing and comparing moments.

Seconds or milliseconds?

Unix and databases use seconds (10 digits today). JavaScript and Java use milliseconds (13 digits). The auto-detect option picks the right unit from the size of the number.

The Year 2038 problem

Systems that store seconds in a signed 32-bit number run out on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. Modern 64-bit systems are safe for billions of years.

Always store UTC

Save timestamps in UTC and convert to a local time zone only when you show them to a person. This avoids daylight-saving bugs.

Questions people ask

What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds that have passed since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, known as the Unix epoch. For example, 1760000000 is 9 October 2025 at 08:53:20 UTC. It is the same everywhere in the world, whatever the local time zone.

How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

Count the digits. Ten digits (such as 1760000000) are seconds, thirteen digits (1760000000000) are milliseconds, sixteen are microseconds and nineteen are nanoseconds. Leave the unit on Auto-detect and the converter works it out, or choose a unit yourself.

How do I convert a date to a timestamp?

Enter the date as DD-MM-YYYY and the time, pick the time zone the date is in, and the Unix time appears instantly in seconds and milliseconds. Use “Use current time” to start from now.

Does it handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Conversions use your browser's built-in time zone database, so offsets such as +01:00 in winter and +02:00 in summer are applied correctly for the chosen date. If you enter a local time that does not exist because clocks skip forward, you get a warning.

Can it convert negative timestamps?

Yes. Negative values are dates before 1970. For example -86400 is 31 December 1969. Years from 1000 to 9999 are supported.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. All conversions run in your browser, using your device's clock for the “Right now” values.
