What gets counted
Words are groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces, so “well-known” is one word and a lone dash is not counted. Characters include letters, numbers, symbols and spaces but not line breaks (the Enter key); the “no spaces” figure leaves all whitespace out. The “Does it fit?” check does add line breaks back in, because platforms count them. Sentences end at a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis, and paragraphs are blocks of text on separate lines.
Reading time assumes about 238 words per minute, the average for adult silent reading. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or voice-over.
Questions people ask
How does the word counter decide what a word is?
A word is any run of letters or numbers, so hyphenated terms like “well-known” and contractions like “don't” each count as one word. Standalone symbols such as a dash or an ampersand are ignored.
Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?
The Characters figure counts letters, numbers, symbols and spaces, but not line breaks (the Enter key). The “No spaces” figure removes all whitespace. The “Does it fit?” check adds line breaks back in, because platforms such as X count them.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute.
What is keyword density and what is a good number?
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared with the total words. There is no magic percentage; use it to spot accidental repetition and to make sure your main topic appears naturally, not to stuff keywords.
Why do some platforms count characters differently?
Platforms apply their own rules. X weights links and some emoji differently, and SMS drops to 70 characters per message if you use non-Latin letters. Treat the length checks as a close guide, then confirm in the platform's own editor.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Counting happens locally in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored.
