How your age is worked out
Age is counted in whole calendar years and months first, then the leftover days. If you were born on 31 January, one month later falls on the last day of February, so a birthday on the 29th, 30th or 31st never skips a month.
Everything uses your device's calendar day, so a time zone change cannot move your date. People born on 29 February celebrate on 28 February in non-leap years in this calculator.
Questions people ask
How is my exact age calculated?
The calculator counts complete calendar years, then complete months, then the remaining days between your date of birth and the chosen date. It also gives total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds.
Can I find my age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the “Age on” date to any day after your birth, such as a job application deadline or a future anniversary, and every figure updates.
Does the countdown to my next birthday update live?
When “Age on” is set to today, the countdown ticks every second, and so does the seconds-lived counter. For any other date it shows the days remaining from that date.
How is the Chinese zodiac decided?
Your browser's Chinese calendar decides it, so births in January or February are placed in the correct lunar year. If a browser does not support that calendar, the tool falls back to an approximate date and says so.
What happens if I was born on 29 February?
Your birthday is shown on 28 February in non-leap years and 29 February in leap years.
Are the heartbeats and full moons exact?
They are estimates for fun. Heartbeats assume about 80 beats a minute, and the moon cycle is taken as 29.53 days.
Is my date of birth stored or sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing is saved.
