In words

Where this is useful

Cheques and invoices

Banks and contracts require the amount in words as well as figures. Cheque style gives “One Hundred Twenty-Three and 45/100 Dollars”.

Legal documents

Writing a number out in words removes doubt about a digit. Use the British “and” option for UK-style documents.

Indian numbering

Switch to lakh and crore for rupee amounts, so 12,50,000 reads “twelve lakh fifty thousand”.

Learning and writing

Check how to spell any number up to 66 digits, or turn words such as “three million four hundred thousand” back into 3,400,000.

Questions people ask

How do I write a number in words?

Type or paste the number and the words appear instantly, for example 1,234 becomes “one thousand two hundred thirty-four”. Put one number per line to convert a whole list at once.

How do I write an amount in words for a cheque?

Choose “Cheque style”, pick the currency and enter the amount, such as 123.45. You get “One Hundred Twenty-Three and 45/100 Dollars”, the format banks expect. “Money” spells the cents out instead: “one hundred twenty-three dollars and forty-five cents”.

What is the difference between the British and American styles?

British English adds “and” after hundreds: “one hundred and five”. American English usually leaves it out: “one hundred five”. Switch on the British “and” option to choose. Large-number names (million, billion) are the same in both.

What are lakh and crore?

They are the units of the Indian numbering system. One lakh is 100,000 and one crore is 10,000,000. Choose the Indian system and 25,00,000 reads “twenty-five lakh”. Amounts above a crore continue in crores, for example “ten thousand crore”.

How big a number can it handle?

Up to 66 digits (the International system names scales up to vigintillion). Numbers are handled as exact text, so large values never lose precision the way a calculator does.

Can it turn words back into a number?

Yes. Switch to “Words → Number” and type something like “two million five hundred thousand and twelve” to get 2,500,012. It understands hyphens, “and”, “minus”, decimals (“point five”), ordinals such as “twenty-first” and lakh and crore.
