Common patterns
\d+ any number \s+ any whitespace \w+ a word . any character ^ start of line $ end of line
Groups and swapping
Wrap part of the pattern in brackets, then reuse it as $1, $2. Find (\w+) (\w+) and replace with $2 $1 to swap two words.
Useful replacements
$& inserts the whole match. Use \n for a new line and \t for a tab in the replacement.
Questions people ask
How do I replace text in several places at once?
Type what you want to find and what to replace it with. Every match is replaced instantly. Add more rules to run several replacements in order, such as fixing a name and then a date.
What does “Whole words only” do?
It only matches complete words, so finding “cat” leaves “category” and “concatenate” alone.
How do I use regular expressions?
Switch on “Regular expressions” and type a pattern, for example \d{4} to match four digits. In the replacement you can use $1, $2 for captured groups. A red outline means the pattern is not valid.
Why does “Matches” show different highlights from the result?
Matches highlights where each rule finds text in your original input. Rules run one after another, so a later rule can match text that an earlier rule created. The Result tab always shows the final output.
Can I replace line breaks?
Yes. With “Read \n as a new line” on, type \n in the find or replace box. For example, find \n and replace with a comma to turn a list into one comma-separated line.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Searching and replacing happens in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
