What makes a good URL slug?

Short and readable

Aim for 3 to 6 meaningful words and under 60 characters. Long slugs get cut off in search results.

Lowercase with hyphens

Search engines treat hyphens as word separators but not underscores, so best-coffee-beans beats best_coffee_beans for SEO.

No special characters

Punctuation, spaces and accents get percent-encoded in URLs (caf%C3%A9). Stripping them keeps links clean to share.

Keep it stable

Changing a published slug breaks old links unless you add a 301 redirect, so pick it carefully before you publish.

Questions people ask

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the readable last part of a web address that identifies a page, such as “best-coffee-beans” in example.com/blog/best-coffee-beans. It is built from the page title with spaces, accents and punctuation removed.

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a slug?

Use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as spaces between words, while underscores join words together, so hyphens help search engines read each word separately.

How long should a slug be?

Shorter is better. Around 60 characters or fewer keeps the whole address visible in search results. Set a maximum length and the tool cuts at a whole word so you never end up with half a word.

What does “Remove filler words” do?

It drops common words like “the”, “and” and “of” to make the slug shorter. If removing them would leave nothing, the original words are kept.

How are accents and other alphabets handled?

With “Convert accents & symbols” on, é becomes e, ß becomes ss, & becomes “and”, and Cyrillic and Greek letters are transliterated into Latin letters. Switch on “Keep non-Latin letters” if you want to keep scripts such as Chinese or Arabic in the slug.

Can I generate many slugs at once?

Yes. Put one title on each line and you get one slug per line. Turn on “Make duplicates unique” to add -2, -3 and so on when two titles produce the same slug.
